EMBERS FROM ASH

Volume.1

Behind this paper door

There’s a subtle burn

Little strokes and puffs of smoke

Of lessons that I’ve learned

From battles lost

I paid the cost

Which grew interest over time

Threatening me with bankruptcy

I had to change my mind

A quarter of love

A nickel of grace

I forgave myself for years

I still do some days

I found the other voices

Who love the sound of me

Their voices had been silenced

By abuse and captivity

Together we lit candles

A network of safety

The embers from these ashes

Serve to set those voices free

Starting with mine

I’m lighting a fire

Burning bridges built on lies

Setting fire to the night

One truth at a time

Poems

Embers by Ash

I've always been a dreamer.

I have a lot of ideas.

Big ideas.

Wild ideas.

"Impossible" ideas.

I also had an unrealistic expectation of myself,

of my motivation

and of the changing seasons of life.

My motivations change with the seasons.

Some seasons I paint my cares away.

Some seasons I have a lot to say.

Somehow.... somewhere.... I bought a lie.

That my creations were bound to some race against time.

That if I didn't "finish" now, then I never could.

I was climbing endless mountains of everything I "should".

All of the expectations of modern entrapment

Had my wings broken and totally bent.

The day he died, so did the lies.

As he went supernova, I felt it ignite.

That fire raging at all the unfairness..

...Sparked the warrior within with an edge of recklessness..

...Starting the wildfire which burned down all of the shoulds..

...Lighting the path for all of the "impossible" coulds..

...Leaving embers that burn with desire..

...To build and to build higher and higher..

Further than I came from

Well on my way to where I'm going

No matter what comes

No matter the degree of knowing

I will persist in creating my dreams

Because they were given to me

I was given a life so they could come to be

It's not in where I'm going - the magic that I see

It's in the process of getting there - that's where I love to be

~Ashley L. Zanella

All I know is that I know very little and what I have learned is that nothing stays the same.

So while the world is constantly set to re- cycle And eats itself up day after day

I listen to the wind whisper tales of Grandfather And cry with Mother when it rains

I walk with my Cousins under the shade of their branches And let sunshine seep through my skin

Tomorrow's an avalanche in the wait Yesterday's a hurricane that nearly destroyed

Today is an oasis

A pause in time

And while today most surely holds pain, I've learned that the most beautiful trees still need rain and that everyone feels storms and disarray.

But we do not grow the same. Some branches turn down and some keep on climbing - some splinter off and others start dying.

I want to be the one who rises above. Who sees through the tangle of branches and leaves--

And to straddle chaos like it's my own sacred breeze.
